Programs The Joy of Music School provides music education to its students through a variety of programs and classes. General Music Class. This beginner class at the School is geared for young children, ages 6-8. Students learn the fundamentals of music and begin to read music through crafts, games, dramatic play, dance, costumes, puppets, singing, and creative movement. Music Theory Class. This computer-based class teaches children the basics of music theory and prepares them for studying an instrument. Choral/Voice. Students choosing to study voice have the opportunity for private voice lessons, choir and small ensembles. All music students can participate in choir. Instrumental Strings. In our instrumental strings program, students learn violin and guitar. Violin students are taught using a modified Suzuki method. Students often participate in practice clubs to win prizes for time spent practicing. Instrumental Piano. Piano students comprise the largest single group of students at the School. Upon enrollment, piano students receive an electronic piano keyboard to practice on at home. Once they’ve studied piano for six months, we offer to move an upright piano to their home for their use. Instrumental Band. Students can choose from a wide variety of band instruments, including brass, woodwind, and percussion to learn in one-on-one and group settings. Outreach. Through outreach programs, Joy of Music teachers visit other locations and provide general music classes to youngsters on a regular basis. Outreach programs have included Boys & Girls Clubs, Emerald Youth Foundation and the Public Defender’s Office. Summer Camp. Summer Camp gives kids the chance to explore a wide variety of musical experiences. Past camps have included Hip-Hop, Bluegrass, and African Drumming. |
