Rick Wolfe was a great friend to the Knoxville music community and a beloved and respected employee at the popular music store, Pick’n'Grin, where he worked for several years. Rick was an extraordinary musician, most notably as a bass player in local bands including The Macdaddies and Crawdaddy, and a longtime member of the Delta Flyers, and Body Heat. He passed away in 2007, but his musical influence lives on in the continuing skills and dedication of his many students and appreciative audience members.

Rick was also known as the go-to choice for any band in Knoxville needing an expert fill-in. With his recordings, teachings, and love of music and musicians, Rick Wolfe left behind a legacy in Knoxville’s music scene that has extended well beyond the city’s boundaries. Wolfe Jam brings together musicians who wish to perpetuate his spirit and love for performing great music for more and more appreciative audiences.

The proceeds from the event benefit the work of the hundreds of deserving students and volunteers at the Joy of Music School.

More details about the event will be forthcoming. Please plan to be at The Well, Restaurant and Bar, 4620 Kingston Pike at 7:00 p.m. on

“The Pick and Grin 2012″ delivers a full afternoon of top-notch entertainment to Knoxville’s Market Square next weekend with amazing live music,
hilarious comedy and a flaming roast of attorney Stephen “King of Swag” Burroughs. All proceeds from The Pick and Grin go to the Joy of Music School.

Market Square’s Latitude 35 will host the 2012 The Pick and Grin on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 featuring Nashville-based recording artist Kimber Cleveland, comedienne Mia Jackson, and singer-songwriter Heather Maples. The event culminates with a roast of Stephen A. Burroughs. Tickets to Pick & Grin 2012 are available now at Latitude 35 for $12 each and attendees are strongly urged to get tickets in advance (we are expecting a large turnout for this event).

The fun will spill into Market Square with Sharkie and Sharkette from Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and kicks off with “Brunch with the Sharks” from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Latitude 35 (brunch is not included with The Pick and Grin ticket price).

The lineup for The Pick and Grin 2012 is as follows:

• At 2 p.m., students from The Joy of Music School will perform. The Joy of Music School in Knoxville is a nonprofit organization providing free music lessons and instruments for hundreds of Knoxville area disadvantaged and at-risk children. All 85 teachers are volunteers. Lessons and classes take place in the School’s building, located just off I-40 near the 17th Street exit, in the Mechanicsville/Lonsdale area. The School also provides music and supplies at absolutely no cost to students. There is currently a waiting list of over 80 children, so the school’s needs have never been greater. All proceeds from Pick and Grin 2012 go directly to the Joy of Music School.

• At 2:30 p.m., Heather Maples will perform. Born and raised in Gatlinburg, Heather is an eighth-generation descendant of Tennessee’s first settlers, and her musical roots run deep. Reflected in her guitar style, hints of bluegrass are found in her soulful but energetic songs.

• At 3 p.m., comedienne Mia Jackson will take the stage. Mia has appeared on Oxygen’s “Girls Behaving Badly” and TLC’s “Wild Weddings”. She was also a writer on BET/Centric’s relaunch of the Soul Train Awards in 2009. Mia is a diverse comedienne with a different voice and perspective. Her energetic conversational style leaves the audience feeling refreshed and as if they have known her forever. Smart, funny, and versatile, Mia entertains all types of crowds, whether it’s corporate, colleges, or comedy clubs.

• Nashville’s Kimber Cleveland will be the headline performer at 3:30 p.m., bringing her quirky, left-of-center, pop/rock sensibility that has garnered the attention of audiences and fans from her hometown of Washington, DC to Nashville, to Dallas, TX to Canada – and virtually everywhere in between. In 2011, Kimber worked extensively with Jewel, and was added to the elite list of artists (including Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley) endorsed by McPherson Guitars. She is currently putting the final touches on her latest recoding project – “Comin’ On Strong” – in Michigan where she has teamed with Grammy Award-winning producers and engineers who have worked with Pink, O.A.R, Dave Matthews Band, Natasha Bedingfield, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Pussycat Dolls, etc. In adition to her on-going, non-stop musical endeavors, Kimber has also held lead acting roles in musical dramas and movies (plus recorded nine original songs for the soundtrack to the movie “Beautiful Noise”). She is a not-to-be-missed performer.

• At 4 p.m., The Roast of Stephen A. Burroughs will begin. Burroughs, the legendary Knoxville attorney who drew 20,000 people to “Swagfest” last year (an event celebrating the unofficial “King of Swag” – Stephen A. Burroughs) will be on hand to participate in the roast and add to the fun. Bring your swag, because Stephen A. Burroughs said to – and his beard demands your respect.

The Pick and Grin 2012 is hosted by SMOMOtv’s Taz Cable. Don’t miss out on this unique event and an opportunity to help the Joy of Music School. Tickets are available now for $12 each at Latitude 35 (groups wishing to buy 10 tickets or more can purchase tickets for $10 each). The fun starts at 2 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive early (all seating is general admission). For more information, call (865) 978-6481 ext. 400.

As we approach the end of the year, we hope you will consider supporting the School’s work with musical children without the means necessary for solid training. In addition to their weekly lessons, the 184 disadvantaged and at-risk children of the School receive their instrument and all the music and supplies they need at no charge. Teachers are trained not only for music instruction, but also as mentors, and they’re all volunteers, eighty-five in all!

The Joy of Music School also extends outreach classes into seven area Boys and Girls Clubs, reaching another 200 children per week–kids who cannot get to our building.

Your support makes this possible. It makes music. It builds children, and invigorates the Knoxville community through the art and discipline of music.

Click “DONATE” on the right, and give the gift of music to a child.

“My father said that every child ought to know how to do certain things. And on that list was music. Every child, in my father’s estimation, should learn how to play the piano, and then should learn another musical instrument.” So begins the story of Dr. Harold A. Black’s life in music. He learned piano, clarinet, and saxophone. Harold says his experience in his high school marching band, more than anything else, shaped his love of music.

Want to leverage more than $5,000 of support for the Joy of Music School with the push of a few buttons? On September 29th, 2011, Knoxville is going to be a BlueOut! Bluegrass, Blue Moon, Pabst Blue Ribbon, BBQ and Bleu Cheese Cole Slaw.

BlueOut Knoxville was born out of a collaboration between two of Knoxville’s most involved social media creative marketing firms. During Social Slam ‘11, Tori Rose of Blue Media Boutique and Jeremy Floyd of Bluegill Creative discussed opportunities to break the traditionally competitive mold of local marketing firms and consider opportunities to work together for good. A few weeks later they reached out to Margaret Slattery at Blue Frog Creations to bring a video element to the table.

The result. BlueOut Knoxville—a charitable event to close summer one last sunny afternoon with beer, BBQ, and Bluegrass.

The way it works:

First… Before August 31, 2011, vote three different ways. We recommend all three!

1. Text JOMS to 22333.

2. Go to www.pollev.com and enter JOMS in the box.

3. Tweet the following on Twitter: @poll JOMS

Next… On September 1st, the top 3 charities with the most votes will be named the blue ribbon finalists.

Finally… Between September 1st and the September 29th (the night of the event), votes may be purchased for $1.

At 8:30 pm on the night of BlueOut Knoxville, the winning charity will be announced!

Pastor Sherman Gardner gathers his youth group from Christ Community Church, The Colony, TX every year and takes them on a national tour performing acts of charity and kindness. This year, among other cities, they descended on Knoxville, and the Joy of Music School. What makes this trip extra special every year is that when the kids get on the bus in Texas, they do not know where they are going until they arrive at each site. Then they pile out of the bus and work, work, work. They do good things for organizations like the Joy of Music School, so that we can continue doing good things for others.

They have restriped the parking lot, cleaned all our carpets, scrubbed floors and walls, and any number of other jobs that need doing in a building that sees 166 kids and 65 volunteer teachers meeting for music lessons every week.

A special twist to this story is that every single person in this youth group is a musician. When many of them learned about the mission of the School by way of ABC TV’s Secret Millionaire broadcast in March, they were already moved. But when they hit Knoxville and learned they would be coming here to help out, they couldn’t wait to jump off that bus and get to work.

We are truly grateful to these wonderful young people, their chaperones and Pastor Sherman Gardner, who saw the School featured on ABC as well, and knew his musical kids would love to stop in and help.
