Andrew Skoog

Andrew Skoog, an associate professor of voice at the University of Tennessee, started volunteering as an instructor at the Joy of Music School in early 2006. Some of his UT colleagues teach at the School and were enthusiastic about it. Even still, Andrew’s experience has far surpassed his expectations. “It’s just been unbelievably fulfilling,” he says. It’s just … pick any positive adjective. The Joy of Music School is such a treasure for Knoxville.”

Andrew has a pair of students, Breyon and Shawn, whom he teaches at the School on Tuesday afternoons. They mainly focus on singing classical music, which is Andrew’s specialty. Breyon has been a student of Andrew’s since he began teaching at the School. Shawn started lessons in 2009.

Andrew grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and came to Knoxville via Tyler, Texas, where he was the director of choral activities at Tyler Junior College. He hesitates to pick a “favorite” type of music, though he has a fondness for opera, oratorio repertoire and symphonic music. In addition to singing, Andrew plays the organ and the piano.

Pride in Achievement

Music has brought a lifetime of pleasure to Andrew Skoog. As a respected voice teacher at the University of Tennessee, he helps college students realize their goals as professional musicians or as they make music a rich part of their lives.

The Joy of Music School offers Andrew another perspective - seeing how much a volunteer can help young students develop their musical abilities.

At his first session Andrew found smiling faces, boundless energy and a place that always immediately made him joyful inside.

Andrew has seen students thrive in this nurturing, protected environment, and an added benefit is sharing the pride students have as they reflect and realize what they have achieved.
