Joy of Music School events come in many shapes and sizes. Some are special events to raise funds for our programs. Some give our kids performance opportunities. Most are presented by our board and staff, while others are put on by community groups who support our work by raising funds at their own events.

Announcing the annual Holiday Sparkles & Spirits! – a gala evening to benefit The Joy of Music School. On Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. supporters of the School gather for a unique holiday event at Cherokee Country Club, Knoxville, Tenn.

Experience the warmth of a Christmas gathering, children’s voices and get a head start on gift-buying for loved ones—all for a great cause. Bid on unique items in arts & culture, travel, food & wine, home & garden, and more.

The evening is highlighted by a brief performance from students of the School. Holiday songs will fill the Cherokee Ballroom, played and sung by talented students studying in our program. What better way to witness the results of the Joy of Music School’s efforts than to experience a live performance?

A silent auction will be held throughout the night, with a live auction culminating the evening.

Domino Ensemble Performance @ Joy of Music School
    Feb 5 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Domino Ensemble Performance @ Joy of Music School

The program will include a composition by one of the School’s students

Students at Knoxville’s Joy of Music School are in for a treat on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when the Domino Ensemble will be making a special appearance at 5 p.m.  The program will include several pieces of original contemporary music, including one written by Joy of Music School student Rodion Osipkin.

The Domino Ensemble is the creation of Jorge Variego, a clarinetist and professor of composition in the University of Tennessee’s Music Department. He’ll be joined by Hunter Deacon on drums and Rob Linton on double bass.

Rodion’s composition combines elements of classical music and hip hop, Variego explained. “It’s very rhythmic and it also has a nice melodic line,” he said. “It’s a very interesting piece — it works very well.”

The Feb. 5 show is part of a series of performances Variego has organized throughout Tennessee and several neighboring states. The project aims to produce interactive shows with students and to highlight young composers. They are funded by a grant from the Nora Roberts Foundation, which was created by the best-selling author.

The show will begin at 5 p.m and last about 45 minutes. It will be open to the public and is free of charge. The Joy of Music School is located at 1209 Euclid Ave. in Knoxville.

Founded in 1998, the Joy of Music School is a nonprofit organization providing free music lessons and instruments to hundreds of financially disadvantaged, at-risk children and teens. All of our teachers–more than a hundred–are volunteers.
